Ways to save money on cleaning products and have a healthier home:

Floor: 1 to 2 capfulls of Orange Oil to every 4 L (1 Gallon) of warm water.

Furniture Cleaner/All-purpose Cleaner: 1/4 to 1/2 capfull of Orange Oil to a near full spray bottle of water (re-use an old one).

Bathroom Cleaner/After Shower Spray: 1/4 to 1/2 capfull of cleaner to a near full sprayer of Hydrogen Peroxide. No need to go industrial strength, just get the regular stuff at the drug store or Costco. After each shower the tub and surround can be sprayed down. Also the product can be used for cleaning the toilet and sink.

Dishes: Get the Mabu cloth. Cheap, lasts near forever, never needs laundering, doesn’t get stinky and is made from natural wood fibres.

Window Cleaning: Never by window cleaner again. Gets the job done quicker. Saves space by not having to store cleaners. Cuts done on paper towel use. The Blue Wonder Cleaning cloth.

Free Budget Speadsheet

February 25, 2009

I have been looking for a budget for sometime. And it was never in my budget to pay for a budget. So I trolled through the many offerings online. It occurred to me that a good budget has to have 3 components:

1. be user friendly.

2. have three columns: budgeted amount, actual amount and difference.

3. has to have enough fields or entry lines in order to fill in all of your expenditures.

This is the best I’ve found :

The main problem with most budgets is that you have to save every receipt throughout the month and then tediously input them into the budget. Only to find out that your actual amount spent is higher than your budgeted amount.

What I have done now to make it easier is put a bowl beside my computer and everytime I am close by I just put my receipts in the bowl. When a few days go by I enter the receipt amounts into the budget and walla! I know exactly where I stand throughout the month. So now when a vendor asks you if you would like a receipt say, yes please!

As an example right now I know that as of  the 25th of February  I have $12.89 (difference) left in my budget for eating out. So needless to say I will be eating in this week.

Give it a try for a month or two. Don’t worry about starting at the first of the month. Do it right away and  use it as a practice session.
